The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has halted the transmission of electricity to its customers, it was made known on Thursday.
Babatunde Fashola, former Minister of Power, endorsed the introduction of the Eligible Customer policy, elucidating that it would stimulate power supply to industries and heavy consumers. He stated this in July 2018.
Currently, He is the Minister of Works and Housing, he expressed that the policy was initiated under powers conferred by Section 27 of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act.
The policy permits power generation companies to sell electricity directly to consumers without passing through the distribution companies, while TCN is the evacuator of the power in most cases.
On August 3, 2021, a letter from TCN, signed by its Market Operator, E.A. Eje, the transmission company informed eligible customers of the suspension of the transaction.
The letter bore the caption “NERC’s Directive to Suspend Eligible Customer Transactions Without the Commission’s Approval”, with the reference no TCN/MO/003/071/002/2021.
A media reporter in Abuja on Thursday sighted the letter. The suspension was based on the directive of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission explained TCN.
